Hello! And thank you for being here. I hope all is well with you.

Let’s continue with the weekly judo resources, and today we are looking at an essential skill: transitioning from tachi-waza to ne-waza.

A word from Nik

A perfect transition is one where you can’t see the joins! By this, I mean the movement flows from the moment your partner lands, quickly and smoothly, into the hold down. To build this skill:

  1. Practice the full movement from standing through to the osaekomi using controlled Nage-Komi (throwing) drills.

  2. During Randori, encourage all throws to be followed up with 10 seconds groundwork.

The teaching materials show Morote-Seoi-Nage into Tate-Shiho-Gatame, but any throws and hold downs can be used. For example:

  1. Osoto-Gari into Kesa-Gatame

  2. O-Goshi into Makura Kesa-Gatame

  3. Tai-Otoshi into Yoko Shiho-Gatame
