In groundwork it’s the details that make the difference. Simple changes in grips and position can tighten and strengthen hold downs dramatically. This hold down is a good example of that.
Makura Kesa-Gatame. An easy way to get into this hold is to start in Mune-Gatame, and then bring your leg through and under uke’s head.
For the older judoka, note that from Makura Kesa-Gatame you can transition quickly into an armlocks. As uke tries to escape the arm often becomes free and open to swing around for a juji-gatame, or ude-gatame.
