Hi! Today, on Koka Kids Coaching Resources, part five of the judo moral code series; an eight-part series of visual resources to encourage the learning of important life values.

Today, we focus on MODESTY.
You may add your logo onto these resources. If that is something you would like me to do for you, please ask about my Club Branding service. (nicola@kokakids.co.uk)
Modesty
One the hardest value of the moral code to understand, and even more difficult to explain. To be modest means to be without ego. But what does that mean? And how can you teach that to children? It is a fine line to understand the difference of being confident and being arrogant, or being proud and being conceited.
Using examples the children might come across in the dojo, is a good way to get the concept across in a way young people can grasp.
Six examples of Modesty in the Dojo
Winning gracefully, without showing off or boasting about your win.
Learning from your mistakes, accepting your errors without making excuses
Allowing yourself to be thrown and being a good uke for your partner
Remembering although you’re an individual you are also part of a team, and be grateful for team who is around you.
Keeping your feet firmly on the floor, and your head out of the clouds.
Thanking someone who has helped you on your journey.
How to develop the quality of Modesty
a) Self-Assurance Without Arrogance:
Recognising abilities and achievements without diminishing others.
Expressing confidence through actions rather than words.
b) Humble Approach to Learning:
Remain open to feedback and criticism .
Approach each training session with a modest mindset, ready to learn and improve.
c) Respectful Competition:
Respect all judoka, regardless of their skill level.
Celebrate victories modestly and accept defeats graciously.
How you might use these visuals to teach the moral code at your dojo:
Create an environment, with visual reminders of the judo moral code and of how judoka are expected to behave
Print up the posters and put them on the entrance to your dojo - make sure everyone knows what is expected as they step through the front door!
Begin discussions by using real-life every-day examples and situations when a judoka shows respect.
Talk about why we bow in judo, and how this is just one demonstration of modesty.
Get the students thinking about their own behaviour.
Give the kids some home-work. Print up the worksheets and hand them out.
Reward modesty with a sticker!
Use the square template below and go online to print up a roll of stickers that you can use to motivate and reward.
