Moral Code: Honesty #4

Hi! Today, on Koka Kids Coaching Resources, part four of the judo moral code series; an eight-part series of visual resources to encourage the learning of values important in judo and in life.

Each month, I am focussing on a different value and sending out a bundle of templates you can use. So far you should have received the resources for three values:

  1. Courage

  2. Courtesy

  3. Honour

You can see all the resources here in »Moral Code

And today, the spotlight falls on HONESTY, and below you’ll find a variety of teaching tools to use at your dojo.

Although the first two of them are designed to be used as posters, there is no reason why you can’t print them up as A5 Flyers and hand them out to impress parents who might not be aware of this aspect of judo. Their children are not only going to learn judo, but also they will be learning crucial life skills.

You may add your logo onto these resources. If that is something you would like me to do for you, please ask about my Club Branding service. (nicola@kokakids.co.uk)

Honesty

Honest hearts produce honest actions! An honest person does what he or she says they will do, and so becomes a trusted member of the dojo. There is also the aspect of self-honesty and being truthful about your own abilities which is useful if you want to improve; as only once you are honest about your weaknesses then you can begin to improve them.

Some ideas around using these visuals to teach the moral code at your dojo:

  • Create an environment, with visual reminders of the judo moral code and of how judoka are expected to behave

    • Print the template and add another poster to your growing set at the dojo.

  • Begin discussions by using real-life every-day examples and situations when a judoka shows honesty.

    • Point your judoka towards the posters, tell them to read them before and after each session.

  • Get the students thinking about their own behaviour.

    • Print up the black and white activity sheets (you’ll find the files at the end), and hand out some good old honest homework!

  • Reward honesty with a sticker!

    • Use the sticker template to print up a roll of stickers. Many online print services offer this online for a reasonable price.
