Let’s continue with the KK+ Technical resources, this time a throw that can be learnt in stages. Here, we start with the basics, then add the bells and whistles. Let’s take a look at: Hiza-Guruma.
As always, uke plays an important role in the learning process. They must allow themselves to roll forwards, so tori can get the feel for the throw.
Build it up:
For beginners, start with uke on their knees. Tori should go through the full Hiza-Guruma movement, emphasising the pull and direction, and uke should help allowing themselves to roll over and fall in the direction of the throw.
From here, the continuation to standing is easy, in some ways easier as there is more space to rotate. Here, you can focus on the placement of the foot near the knee (hiza) and the wheel (guruma) motion.
Progression can follow with comparing this technique with a similar technique Sasae-Tsuri-Komi-Ashi and learning the subtle differences
Next, these techniques can be built into combinations with Osoto-Gari.
