Let’s continue with the KK+ Technical resources, with a look at escaping from being held. Sooner or later, we are all going to end up on the wrong side of an osaekomi, so it’s important to practice methods to escape. This week we look at: Escaping from Kami-Shiho-Gatame



A portion of groundwork training should be dedicated to practicing escapes.


Three points to remember when escaping

  1. Use your legs to push against the tatami

  2. Lots of sudden, sharp movements are effective in creating gaps and space.

  3. Work out which part of your body is holding you back and free it up.
