Let’s continue with the judo throws, and look at a technique that is a must-have in any repertoire: Kosoto-Gari.

Te-waza are throws where the hands play a central role. You can see the full category of techniques classified by the IJF as te-waza here. I’ve selected these six techniques to keep things practical and manageable, but there are 16 in total.

First up, a fairly easy combination suitable for intermediates: Deashi-Barai into Kouchi-Gari. Then a more complex combination for advanced judoka: Deashi-Barai into Uchimata.

Why do Teaching Cards help kids learn?

• Visual Learning. Many children learn visually, and being able to see each step of the technique helps them visualise the technique in the mind’s eye, comprehend the stages and understand the full throw quickly and easily.

• Study in your own time. These cards allow each child to study slowly, after class, at their own pace. They act as reminders, reinforcing what you are teaching during the class.

• Progress and Development. The cards allow judoka to mark their own progress, ticking the throw as they learn how to do the basics.

Two Combinations to Teach

1: Deashi-Barai into Kouchi-Gari

• Create movement with deashi-barai. Force your partner to react by stepping off and backwards. Use this backward movement to your advantage. Follow up with kouchi-gari on the opposite side.

• Ashi-waza skills. This combination can be extended into an ashi-waza circuit that perpetuates. For example if uke steps off the kouchi-gari then they open themselves up to deashi-barai again. And so on…

• Mat Drills. A good warm-up is to train this ashi-waza circuit with uke walking backwards and tori attacking one foot after the other for the length of the tatami.

An advanced combination because of the sutemi-waza, but really not difficult to do. Especially if you keep the following in mind.

Teaching points:

1. First, make sure uke is able to roll safely when attacked with Sumi-Gaeshi. This can be done by allowing uke to take the initiative and roll. To practice this tori can slowly fall back, place their foot against the inner thigh, but no more. Then it’s up to uke to roll over.

2. Ensure there is enough space around the judoka, as this throw needs movement in the lead up, and in the landing.

As always, uke plays an important role in the learning process. They must allow themselves to roll forwards, so tori can get the feel for the throw.

Build it up:

1. For beginners, start with uke on their knees. Tori should go through the full Hiza-Guruma movement, emphasising the pull and direction, and uke should help allowing themselves to roll over and fall in the direction of the throw.

2. From here, the continuation to standing is easy, in some ways easier as there is more space to rotate. Here, you can focus on the placement of the foot near the knee (hiza) and the wheel (guruma) motion.

3. Progression can follow with comparing this technique with a similar technique Sasae-Tsuri-Komi-Ashi and learning the subtle differences

4. Next, these techniques can be built into combinations with Osoto-Gari.

Make the first attack realistic. Keep it real.

Ippon Seoi Nage is the set up attack. Although its just a feint, and an incomplete attack, it’s really important that it’s realistic enough to make uke react. The reaction you are want is for uke to block, by sinking their hips.

1. I have found a good way to practice this is to first do several full Ippon Seoi Nage attacks, with uke blocking each one. If uke doesn’t block, then throw them forwards.

2. Once you have this movement ingrained, then keep the upper body movement (pull uke forwards, turn the head), but do not move your feet. See if you can still convince uke that an Ippon Seoi Nage is coming, and get them to react and block.

3. Once you are provoking a genuine reaction and fooling uke with just your upper body, you can begin to switch backwards into the Kouchi-Gake.

A great throw to get children moving around the tatami and attacking.

There are various drills (that you can do with any technique) to encourage movement and breaking of balance before attack.

1. Alternate Uchi-Komi, where one judoka turns in then out, then the other. This can be done with set steps in-between.

2. Move and Attack. Similar to the first drill, but now the movement is freer, with both judoka moving all around the tatami, but still attacking alternately.

3. Move, Set up and Attack. This time, just one judoka does all the attacking for a period of time, say 1 minute, then swop over.

The secret to getting any combination to work is making the first technique realistic enough to provoke a reaction. The Kouchi-Gari needs to threaten sufficiently.

The goal of the Kouchi-Gari is two-fold.

1. First, it opens up a space to attack.

2. Second, it gets a reaction, making uke stumble backwards. The moment to attack however comes a split second later as uke attempts to regain their position and come forwards onto the morote-seoi-nage.
